What is a Christian?

The word "Christian" literally means "Christ-follower". And since "Christ" means "Savior," then to be a Christian is really to be someone who follows Jesus as their Savior. Jesus said it himself in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me."

A Christian isn't just someone who attends church. Going to church without a relationship with Christ won't make someone a Christian anymore than walking in the woods makes you a tree. Becoming a true Christ-follower isn't about where you go, but who you know!

So how do i become a Christian?

It's not about religion, it's about relationship.

To become a "Christian" we need to begin a relationship with Jesus Christ. This relationship starts by coming to him and acknowledging our failure and asking for his forgiveness. Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard." If you're ready to admit your failure to live up to God's ideal, He is ready to forgive you and cleanse you from all your guilt. Start by praying and inviting God into your life. Here's an example:

Dear God, I trust you. I believe through Jesus, you have come to offer us eternal life now. Help me to leave my sin behind and rise to a new way of being me. I don’t want to be separated from you any longer. I want to come home. I ask your Spirit to cleanse me, to fill me, and to teach me how to live and love like Jesus. Thank you that today I am a child of God, a new creation, and the old is passed away! In Jesus name, Amen.

Next comes our commitment to following him, which simply means to do whatever he would want us to do. And if we're going to learn what his will is for our lives, this will mean that we become students of the Bible and study it for ourselves alongside other believers. That's why it's so important to get plugged into a church so you can connect with others and grow in your faith in God. Faith simply means "active trust", believing in someone or something enough to act upon that belief.

Are you ready to commit your life to following Jesus as his disciple? He's ready to lead you into new and deeper life! (John 10:10).
